Convert tablespoons to milliliters instantly with a live calculator, a cooking reference chart, and the manual math.
Recipes from the US, Canada, and the UK measure small liquid and dry amounts in tablespoons, while Europe, Australia, and most kitchen measuring tools use milliliters. A person cooking an American recipe with a European measuring jug has to convert every spoonful of oil, vinegar, or vanilla. The reverse happens too: a European recipe says 25 ml and the only measuring tool in the kitchen is a tablespoon set.
There is a genuine trap here: the tablespoon is not the same everywhere. The US tablespoon is 14.79 ml, the Australian tablespoon is 20 ml, and the UK imperial tablespoon is about 17.76 ml. This page uses the US standard (14.79 ml), which is what most American recipes assume. If a recipe says "tablespoon" with no country, US recipes are the most common, but for Australia always use 20 ml.
Convert 3 tablespoons to milliliters:
| Tbsp | Milliliters | Tbsp | Milliliters | Kitchen note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 tbsp | 14.79 ml | 6 tbsp | 88.72 ml | 1/4 US cup = 4 tbsp |
| 1.5 tbsp | 22.18 ml | 8 tbsp | 118.29 ml | 1/2 US cup = 8 tbsp |
| 2 tbsp | 29.57 ml | 10 tbsp | 147.87 ml | — |
| 3 tbsp | 44.36 ml | 12 tbsp | 177.44 ml | 3/4 US cup = 12 tbsp |
| 4 tbsp | 59.15 ml | 14 tbsp | 207.02 ml | — |
| 5 tbsp | 73.93 ml | 16 tbsp | 236.59 ml | 1 US cup = 16 tbsp |
1 US tablespoon = 14.7868 ml, usually rounded to 15 ml for cooking. Australian tablespoons are 20 ml.
16 tablespoons in 1 US cup (237 ml). A half cup is 8 tbsp, and a quarter cup is 4 tbsp.
2 × 14.7868 = 29.57 ml, commonly called 30 ml. Two tablespoons is also exactly 1 US fluid ounce.
